Evidence Moses led the Children of Israel out of Egypt into Saudi Arabia (Midian)

 Traditional-Map-Exodus

Recent evidence is proving what the Bible said from the beginning in the book of Exodus. Archaeology is catching up to the WORD of God. If you look on most Bible Maps, they show Moses leading the Children of Israel out of Egypt into the Sinai Peninsula to Mount Horeb.  The problem with these maps, they missed the location of Mount Horeb. Remember Mount Horeb is where God directs Moses to bring Israel out of the land of Egypt. (See Figure 1) Most maps locate this in the southern area of the Sinai Peninsula.

Where is Midian Located

When we read scripture, we see something else, Moses fled from Egypt into the land of Midian. Where was

Location of Midian in Saudi Arabia

Midian located? Midian was located in modern day Saudi Arabia. (See Figure 2)The two gulfs on both sides of the Sinai Peninsula, the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba are considered part of the Red Sea.

Exodus 2:14-16 (14)  He answered, "Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses was afraid, and thought, "Surely the thing is known."(15)  When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well.(16)  Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.

Moses was forty years old when he entered Midian, there we met his wife, the daughter of Jethro priest of Midian. The Midianites were the descendants of Abraham through Keturah his third wife. Abraham married her following the death of Sarah (Gen 25:1-2). This took place 400-years before Moses, the descendants of Midian, like Israel became a nation. Forty years later when Moses was eighty-years old, God called to him from Mount Horeb to lead the children of Israel out of captivity. Where was Moses to lead them? It was to this very mountain in Midian, Mount Horeb, where God appeared to Moses. This mountain is located in Saudi Arabia today.

Exo 3:1-2 (1)  Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.(2)  And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed.

Moses returns to Egypt with his brother Aaron, they confront Pharaoh with the 10-plagues from God, Pharaoh relents and lets Israel go. Later Pharaoh changes his mind and decides to pursue Israel in the wilderness, Israel seems trapped between the wilderness and the Red Sea. Here God commands Moses to part the waters so Israel can cross on dry ground into the land of Midian to worship the LORD on Mount Horeb. (See Figure 3)

Exo 33:6-7 (6)  Therefore the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward. (7)  Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the LORD would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.

Crossing the Red Sea in MidanThis mountain in Saudi Arabia is known as Jebel el Lawz, the evidence around the mountain fits perfectly with the descriptions described in Exodus. The “Rock” split with evidence of water very evident (Exodus 17:6)(See Figure 5)

Exo 17:6 (6)  Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink." And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. (See Figure 4)
